Our tasks

Association of Protestant Churches and Missions in Germany (EMW) gives support to its members and associates in various ways in the exercise of their tasks pertaining to their collaboration with Christians and churches overseas, a collaboration which is worldwide, ecumenical, and developmentally directed.

As a professional body, the EMW offers opportunities to get advice and coordination for assignments, projects, and programmes. Technical discussions, consultations, and ad hoc working groups bring together the skills of our members and associates, and make the competencies of the EMW useful and accessible for all members. These tasks are specially organized by the regional and technical department of the EMW office. Additionally, the EMW offers legal advice to its members, and represents their concerns to the Federal Government, amongst others.

Of special significance for the churches are the continental Councils of Churches in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East, with which the EMW works closely. One focus area lies in financial support for common facilities of the churches, for example in the areas of theological education and programmes for inter-faith dialogue.

While the financial means for programmes and projects are mainly raised by the regional and free churches, and managed through the so-called ‘Statement of Needs’, the administrative budget of the EMW office is financed through our members.

The work of EMW members is characterized by a special closeness to their ecclesiastical roots: for decades they have been promoting collaboration between parishes at home and parishes overseas, and have maintained long and stable relationships with the churches, thereby enabling theological exchanges throughout the worldwide ecumenical community. The specific promotion of programmes and projects are supported by numerous parishes and groups.

A special task of the EMW is to promote the commitment to missionary and ecumenical work in the German churches and the general public. In collaboration with our members, publications on various countries or topical themes as well as Work Guides are produced, which, like the German magazine EineWelt, are in huge demand.

As an umbrella body, the EMW is a partner of ecumenical organizations such as the Lutheran World Federation , the World Communion of Reformed Churches , and the World Council of Churches .
